Personal Reaction:
One fine day, from out of town, and without any warning at all...

So begins this bouncy little tale of a magic hat that changes whomever it lands upon into an animal. When the hat lands on a curmudgeonly looking man, he turns into a toad. When it lands on a mother with a baby in her arms, she becomes a kangaroo and the baby becomes a joey in her pouch. And so it goes until a giant wizard appears with a magic wand to turn all the animals back into people.

This book by Mem Fox- a highly respected children's literacy leader- is a wonderful read aloud. Children love the anticipation of seeing what type of animal each person will turn into, and its rhythmic sing-songy cadence, large format, and illustrations that read well from across a room make this a good choice for groups of young children.
