Hennepin County Library’s Birth to Six initiative is an early literacy website for parents, teachers and caregivers of young children. This website is attractive, easily navigated and accessible to parents. Featured on the Birth to Six site are videos, booklists, fingerplays, links, and early literacy information in a variety of languages. Hennepin County Library’s Birth to Six page also features the Early Literacy Storytime Ideas Exchange (ELSIE), an innovative searchable database of books that promote the six early literacy skills. Books are searchable by keyword or by the specific skill (or combination of skills) they support.

For librarians and educators, the early literacy information and resources of Birth to Six are a bit rudimentary, but they are a perfect introduction for parents. The science and technical jargon of early literacy are played down in favor of practical reading tips, suggested books and fingerplays. Birth to Six is a good introduction to the basics of early literacy and the ways books and libraries support early literacy development.

Audience: parents

Strengths: accessible, well formatted, practical information; some material is available in many languages; early literacy book database

Weaknesses: information is a good introduction, but likely too basic for librarians, educators and other professionals
